Pandering and self-improvement are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Honesty is an important key to success. This can sometimes put coaches in a hard spot. As your Coach, our number one job for you is to help you become better. We are constantly on the lookout for movements faults and that can seem like a bad thing to non-coaches.
If we notice someone is struggling or isn’t progressing in our class, we have a moral obligation to help correct them and maybe even talk to them about it. But it can come off like conflict or a confrontation, which can cause an unintentionally awkward situation. This is NOT our intention.
Great coaches know how to approach each member individually and bring up these sensitive subjects without inherently angering or upsetting them. There may be some friction and sometimes it may be a very hard pill to swallow BUT your Coach wants to see you succeed. A good Coach will have those communication skills without being inflammatory or hurtful.
We know that sometimes in the heat of battle, in the middle of a workout where you're racing the clock and on the verge of complete exhaustion that it can seem hurtful to hear your Coach correct you. But it is your responsibility to understand that your Coach is coming from a caring place. We are trying to help you move better.
We do appreciate your hard work and effort every day and we absolutely LOVE when somebody does something remarkable or previously thought unattainable after training and practicing so hard. We want to celebrate with you when you finally PR that huge lift or get your first legit pull-up or when receive that "RX" next to your name on the whiteboard and we want to let you know that you EARNED THIS MOMENT and that it wasn't just given to you.
Please understand and try to always remember that your Coach is your biggest FAN! But if all we do is cheerlead for you instead of helping you, pushing you, correcting you and COACHING YOU to better yourself then we're doing you a HUGE disservice.
Learn to welcome the feedback your Coach provides; it shows that your Coach is paying attention to YOU and wants YOU to do great things.
